CNN anchor and award-winning documentary producer Soledad O’Brien will be the keynote speaker at the 2012 Latina Summit, sponsored by the LUPE Fund, Inc. in collaboration with Douglass Residential College on Saturday, September 29, 2012.
Soledad O’Brien is the host of the daily CNN morning program Starting Point. From her famed “Latino in America” series to “The Next Big Story,” a tale of her own reporting adventures, Ms. O’Brien has already left a dazzling impression on audiences nationwide. At the conference, she will not only share her experience, advice and inspiration but will explain how she balances a successful career with marriage – and motherhood of 4!
The LUPE Fund, Inc. is a civic 501c3 non-profit entity created in 2002 by a group of Latina leaders to raise awareness about the role of Latinas in New Jersey. LUPE seeks to educate, empower and engage Latinas from all walks of life through leadership training, advocacy and education.
Douglass Residential College will be the site of this first ever state-wide conference of Latinas. Dean of the College, Jacquelyn Litt stated “I’m honored to continue the College’s great tradition by partnering with LUPE, an association of women dedicated to promoting the improvement and empowerment in women’s lives. A conference dedicated solely to the achievements of Latinas is so important, for our lives today and for an improved future.”
Newark Mayor Cory Booker will introduce Soledad O’Brien at the Latina Summit Lunch, part of the day-long event. Angelica Fuentes, CEO of the hugely successful nutritional supplement company Grupo Omnilife, will kick start the day as the event’s breakfast speaker. What follows will be an information-packed day of workshops designed to prepare, inspire, motivate, connect, and empower Latinas.
“Whether you’re a student planning a career in the arts or in the sciences, or a mid-career woman considering getting into politics or opening your own small business, the 2012 LUPE Latina Summit has something to offer you,” says Margarita Muniz, LUPE Fund, Inc. Board Chair. Peggy Anastos, Vice-chair of LUPE and Co-chair of the Latina Summit said “The Latina Summit will provide you with opportunities to network, meet a mentor, or learn about starting your own business.”
The Latina Summit will feature four tracks of workshops and seminars – Young Latina Leadership, Civic Engagement, Business Development, and Latina Health & Wellness. Some of the many intriguing workshops include: getting to know the legislative process; using social media to jump-start your career; and how to lead from within. For the business-oriented, there’s career prep in a global economy; entrepreneurship; and self-marketing. And those with an interest in health issues might seek out Addressing Health Disparities; Spiritual Wellness for Life; and an introduction to careers in the health care industry.
The Premier Sponsor of the Latina Summit is Walmart. In addition, various aspects of the Summit are being sponsored by the following entities: Douglass Residential College at Rutgers University, Barnabas Health, Comcast, ETS, OmniLife, PSE&G, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Rutgers University.
The 2012 state-wide LUPE Latina Summit will be held on Saturday, September 29, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on the campus of Douglass Residential College, 100 George Street, New Brunswick, NJ.
