President Nestor Montilla’s 2009 National Conference Message
With the theme “Renewed Vision – Renewed Commitment,” the Dominican American National Roundtable (DANR) and its National Board of Directors are pleased to invite you to join us for and sponsor our 12th Annual National Conference to be held Dec 4-6, 2009 in Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Walt Disney World®, Florida.
The DANR is the premier national forum for Dominican Americans and America’s only national voice advocating on behalf of over 1.6 million Dominicans living in the United States and Puerto Rico. This national gathering is considered to be among the most important events of the year on the Dominican American and Latino calendars. During the Conference, sponsors will be able to take full advantage of the numerous opportunities to market, recruit from, and network with hundreds of Dominican American and Latino professionals, educators, artists, elected officials, community leaders, businesspeople, union leaders, sports celebrities, and college students coming from all over the country, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
With an emphasis on the Dominican Family, culture and traditions, the Conference will kick off on Friday, December 4th with a welcome reception followed by a comedy night with Freddy Beras-Goyco, an internationally acclaimed Dominican comedian, television personality and author who has graciously accepted volunteering his time and talent to help DANR fund raise resources for its national scholarship programs for students.
On Saturday, December 5th, the Conference will feature a National Issue Breakfast on the U.S. 2010 Census. The breafast will be followed by concurrent workshop tracks on the youth, Census 2010, education, economic development, technology, women, Dominican-Puerto Rican historical relations, and Dominican-African American Relations. At noon, during the Conference Power Luncheon, the DANR President will deliver the first national State of Dominicans in the U.S. address.
In the afternoon, the Conference will feature the World Première of original film documentary Los Panfleteros de Santiago (Santiago’s Pamphleteers), the untold true story of courage and heroism of 27 young Dominican rebels (between the ages of 14 and 19) who were tortured and executed for exercising their freedom of speech rights to reclaim their country from a cruel dictator. A survivor, Dr. Ramon Antonio Veras (El Negro Veras), will attend the première to reveal how he survived and how this group of humble youngmen advocated and fought to change the history of the Dominican Republic.
In the evening, after its National Awards Ceremony, the DANR will present a signature Dinner Concert by Dominican music icon Rafael Solano and singer Nini Cafaro who will celebrate with the audience the 40th Anniversary of song Por Amor, an international immortal classic hymn sung and cherished by people of all ages from every corner of the earth.
There will be VIP receptions and more activities programmed for the conference, including a dominoes tournament, a special performance for the youth and students, a National Educators’s Network forum, a sunday breakfast about a national issue, a forum with US elected officials of Dominican descent and among many other highlights, a national DANR general membership meeting to help set the direction of the Dominican American National Roundtable.
