San Juan, Puerto Rico. On Sunday, December 18, 2017, the National Dominican American Council (NDAC) held a membership meeting in Casa Dominicana in Barrio Obrero, Santurce, Puerto Rico. The purpose was to swear-in new members, elect the 2017-2018 local Board of Directors, appoint two members from Puerto Rico to the NDAC National Board of Directors, and to vote and set the agenda and the short and long-term socio-economic and political goals for Dominicans in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
NDAC Chairman Nestor Montilla, Sr. presided over the meeting. After presenting previous meeting’ s minutes for adoption, Montilla sworn-in a group of new members. Then, the election of the new local NDAC board of directors in Puerto Rico took place. Officers elected included Ana Marchena, Ph.D., unanimously elected as director of the local board; Aileen V. Rivera Rijo, sub-director, Alberto Bejaran, treasurer and Leodany Inojosa secretary. Several members at large were also unanimously elected: Elena Checo, Alexander Bejaran Estevez, Soribel A. Betances, Rhadames Alberti, Francisco Batista, Alejandro Mendoza Rodriguez, Gilda M. Santos Severino, Ada Limas, Pamela Reyes Benal, Coral N. Acevedo Sanchez, Altagracia DIaz, Luis E. Soriano Ponciano.
After being elected by members of the local board, Chairman Montilla announced the appointment of Professor Alberto Correa, Ph.D., and Leonady Inojosa to serve on NDAC’s National Board of Directors for a two year-terms. The local council submitted a motion to NDAC National Board of Directors to increase the number of representatives from Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Island from two to three. The Local Board voted unanimously to elect Alexander Berjaran to NDAC National Board of Directors subjet to ratification of said body in its next official election in early 2017.
Ing. Francisco “Pachin” Ramirez was also elected and appointed advisor to the National Dominican American Council. Appointments took effect immediately.
The responsibilities of NDAC’s national board of directors is to set the mission and direction of the organization, and to oversee the functioning of the regional boards of directors, which govern the work of the local councils, according to the bylaws.
NDAC works in conjunction with the Dominican American National Roundtable (DANR), whose Board of Directors is presided over by the Honorable Claribel Martinez-Marmolejos.
